West Indies Women Downed by India

Spinners Rajeswari Gayakwad and Ekta Bist combined for seven of 10 wickets as India scored a six-wicket win over the West Indies on Thursday. Batting first at Viyawanda the regional team were scuttled out for 131 in 42.4 overs, with Gayakwad claiming figures of four for 21, while Bist ended with three for 14.  Middle order batsman Merissa Aguilleira did her best to steady the innings with a determined 42 from 96 balls, with opener Hayley Matthews being the team’s next best with 24 from 49.

In reply India found themselves in early trouble at 36 for four, but Veda Krishnamurthy’s unbeaten 52 from 70 balls steadied the home team’s reply.  Krishnamurthy got solid support from veteran batswoman Mithali Raj who struck a patient 46 of 91 balls. Raj hit six boundaries, while Krishnamurthy had four fours and two sixes. Despite the loss the West Indies Women are one win away from securing direct entry to the 2017 Women’s World Cup. They will now have to wait till the second ODI on Sunday to qualify
