There has been an absolute pouring of sympathy all over the island as word of the tragic death of young Joanne Wilfred spread through the island. Dr. Anthony George and Team St. Lucia visited the home of the late national netball player on Saturday 10th September 2016.
Dr. George in the company of other Olympic hopefuls including former Sportswoman of the year Makeba Alcide, and president of Netball St. Lucia Inc. Liota Charlemange-Mason took the trek to the sporting community of Canaries to comfort the bereaved family.
Joanne Wilfred, whose last name had been recently changed to Shepard, is the cousin of former Youth of the year Tevin Shepard. Joanne came from a family of a rich tradition in sporting excellence in St. Lucia. She is sister to national Youth Footballer Antoine Wilfred and her even younger sister played on the National female football team.
St. Lucia Sports Online now understands that her grand mother also passed away in a similar fashion. While the family is awaiting the results of a post mortem examination, it is suspected that the young netball star that also played football died due to complications of the heart.
