The Department of Youth Development and Sports Press Release on the Lighting of Playing Fields

The Government of St. Lucia through the Department of Youth Development and Sports remains mindful that high quality physical education and sport can contribute to the sustainable development goals through enhancing lifelong physical literacy and supporting a range of wider educational benefits.To this end they are committed to providing facilities for the personal development of the youth in their communities and modernize them through sports and other activities that will empower them. Through this process sports can serve as a vehicle of encouraging a culture of teamwork, cooperation and discouraging anti social behavior.

Hence the Department is embarking on a comprehensive program of the upgrading of sporting facilities in all communities in as well as the provision of lights on playing fields and other sporting facilities. This initiative is in partnership with the National Lottery Authority along with development support from the Taiwanese Government. As the Department of Youth Development of Sport seeks to engage its efforts in improving the quality of playing facilities on the island, the following facilities will be receiving attention for lighting and rehabilitation in the 2017 – 2018 financial year.

  • Dennery South Playing Field – Completion of lights on football and cricket playing field – fencing of perimeter of football playing Field – Fencing of perimeter of football laying field and completion of surface works on the football playing field
  • Canaries Playing Field – Completion and commissioning of playing field involving the realignment of one electrical pole and the removal of the control room from its current position. In addition the resurfacing of the Canaries Playing Field.
  • Choiseul Playing Field – lighting of the said facility.
  • Finally lighting of the Fond Assau Playing Field.
