Sweet vindication for Soufriere! The team from the west coast of the island came good on their promise to seal victory in the 2015-2016 Veterans In Sports Inc Caribbean Alliance Gold Cup championship. After suffering what organizers described as an unfortunate loss in last year’s final against Caricom Masters, the Veterans of Sulphur City defeated an emotional Congorians 1-nil. The first half saw Soufriere taking the game to the team from up north, enjoying a lion’s share of possession and opportunities. Yet, an impressive display of defence and counter-attacking football by congorians proved satisfactory, as the teams went into the locker-rooms on a nil-all score line.
In the beginning of the second half, Congorians squandered the few half chances, they were afforded. As such, the home team who always looked the more likely of the two to pierce the old onion bag began to stamp their authority on their opponents. It took just 13 minutes into the second half for the MVP of the final affectionately known in the community as “barboy,” to place a brilliant right footed shot pass the diving hands of the Congorian keeper. This goal which sent the capacity crowd at the Soufriere Mini Stadium into a frenzy, secured the veterans of Soufriere’s first Caribbean Alliance Trophy and a cool $10,000.
