FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Saint Lucia Basketball Federation (SLBF) signed a letter of intent to participate in an International Lesser Antilles 3×3 tournament for girls & boys born 1999, 2000 & 2001 (U17) supported by FIBA’s foundation, the International Basketball Foundation (IBF). The Tournament is slated to be held sometime between October & December of 2016 and The SLBF intends to send both a male and female contingent to represent St. Lucia. As part of the qualification criteria, the SLBF is required to hold a national qualifier to select the participating teams which should be held prior to October and follow the rules of FIBA 3×3 Basketball. To prepare for this, the Federation attended a 3×3 workshop which was held this past weekend from May 6th to 8th to train officials on the tools and apprise them of all the other requirements and items that should be finalized prior to and for the International Lesser Antilles 3×3 tournament. Some of these items were the introduction of a web-based platform to be used for scheduling and reporting of the national qualifier, as all participating players have to register & confirm their registration on 3x3planet.com where they will be ranked based on participation. The minimum requirement for the National open qualifier is confirmation and registration of 15 teams. A benefit of participation in the 3×3 Workshop held at the FIBA Americas headquarters in Puerto Rico, the SLBF and the other participating Federations received 10 official 3×3 Balls to assist in hosting the National 3×3 qualifier. More details will be provided in the upcoming weeks on this initiative. The SLBF & FIBA sees this as an opportunity to improve on youth basketball particularly in the Caribbean region.
