St. Lucia is getting ready to host the ninth annual Creole Boxing Championships at the Beausejour Indoor Facility from the 4th – 9th of July.At a Press Conference held yesterday to unveil plans to staging the championship, representative of one of the main sponsors Blue Waters indicated that company was very happy to be part of the event, after witnessing boxing in St. Lucia for the first time at the OECS Boxing Championship.However, she did lament the absence of the crowd support and implored the Association to seize the opportunity in marketing the event to its fullest.
For his part President of the Association David Shakes Christopher indicated that plans are well on their way in staging a successful championship. He confirmed eleven countries will be participating including for the first time two boxers from Haiti. In total approximately a hundred boxers will be on island.While recognizing that the French speaking boxers are very aggressive, nevertheless he is very confident that team St. Lucia would give a very good account of themselves, since for months the team though without the boxing gym has been putting in quite a lot of hard work. This year’s team include a few young boxers from the Boy’s Training Institution.
In terms of the host venue, organizers intend to make it more attractive and comfortable for patrons to want to attend.Christopher also gave an update on the progress of the refurbishing of the Boxing Gym and indicated that in the up coming weeks one will see the covering of the roof. Though they are still short of funds he is very optimistic that the entire construction of the Gym will be completed within a months time.Meanwhile all mechanisms are be put in place for the staging of this Saturday’s upcoming Road Show to be held in the town of Gros Islet.
