Legendary fast bowler Michael Holding has come off the long run characterized by whispering death to dismiss Brian Lara’s criticism of his conduct and fellow team mates during West Indies 1980 tour of New Zealand, saying he has never been interested in the batting great’s opinion.
“I am not interested in whatever Brian Lara says. Never was, never will be,” as was Holdings blunt response on what Lara said.It is a well known that both the West Indies greats Lara and Holding are not the best of friends. Holding had previously accused Lara of getting away with murder, during his tenure of captaining the West Indies team. And as far as Holding is concerned Brian Lara can say whatever he wants and he will not listen.
He went further to say he was never a Brian Lara fan and never appreciated the way he played, while in addition he Lara was guilty of many transgressions which successive Boards turned a blind eye to.“As for having a big effect on cricket, Holding said he was very glad about it, as it brought to the fore the introduction of the international panel of umpires into force.”
But again it wasn’t just about us as there were other incidents involving Mike Gatting and Arjuna Ranatunga which Lara seem to ignore. As far as Holding is concerned “We believed in ourselves and the more we won the more it built our belief to become even greater. Winning became a habit and every time we went out on that field, we expected to win.”
