St. Lucia Under 16 team went down to Dominica Under 16 team in their second match 42 – 36, at the Vigie Sports Complex yesterday evening.
The St. Lucia team showed more purpose and fight this time around and settled down much better to match their opponents goal for goal. However at the end of the first quarter Team Dominica held a slight advantage leading 11 – 10.
At the resumption there was no letting up as St. Lucia began stringing their passes together with more purpose, while at the same executing some daring interceptions. They continued to capitalize on their opportunities with St. Lucia’s Goal Attack Megan Nestor, literally controlling the centre court. This effort paid dividends as St. surged into the lead for the first time in the game to lead by as many as four goals. Dominica got their rhythm back and with some accurate shooting reduced the deficit to end the second quarter trailing 18 – 21.
The pattern of play in the third quarter changed dramatically as St. Lucia were forced into creating numerous turnovers as a result of the unrelenting pressure by the swifter and more skilful Dominicans. They literally took the sting out of their opponents to outscore them 13 to 5. The third quarter with Dominica leading 31 – 26.
The final quarter brought about the best in both teams, and although St. Lucia tried gallantly on the evening the better team won with Dominica nailing it outscoring St. Lucia 11 – 8, to clinch a hard fought but well deserved victory.Leading the way for Dominica were Celina Langalaise, 31 from 39 attempts, and Kayla Telemacque 11 from 16. For St. Lucia Megan Nestor contributed 26 from 35 attempts, Gasha Eugene 6 from 8 and Ariel Leonard 2 from 2.
Earlier yesterday morning Dominica made light work of St. Joseph’s Convent Egrets defeating them handsomely 55 – 14. They lead at every quarter 14 – 6; 28 – 10; and 40 – 13.Once again Celina Langalaise had a hot hand netting 51 from 59, while for St. Joseph’s Convent Egrets, Brittny Desir netted 9 from 20 attempts and Malika Destang 5 from 11.
Matches continue later this morning with St. Lucia Under 16 coming up against St. Joseph’s Convent Egrets from 8.00 am, while at 5.00 pm St. Lucia and Dominica will play the final match in the series. All matches are scheduled for the Vigie Sports complex.
