Almost three hundred student athletes and team officials from the Windward Islands will gather in St. Vincent and the Grenadines July 22 – 29 for the 2017 CBN / WINLOTT Windward Islands School Games. The groups are expected to arrive on Friday 21st July, and the opening ceremony is slated for Saturday 22nd July at 10.00 am.On Monday July 17th a meeting was held with representatives of various components to review preparations and institute changes where needed. According to the chairperson of the local organizing committee Ms. Elizabeth Walker, the meeting was a success, and all systems are in place for this year’s hosting.
One of the major issues dealt with was the finalizing of the schedule, which determined that games scheduled for the Chilly hard courts had to be now shifted to alternative venues. Male and female basketball will now be played at the Arnos Vale and Keartons hard courts, while male and female volleyball will be played at Gomea. Netball will now be played at the Keartons courts, with football scheduled for the Arnos Vale and Georgetown Playing fields respectively. St. Vincent and the Grenadines last hosted the games four years ago.
Meanwhile Grenada, the defending champions have named a strong all round team to participate in this year’s games. The team comprises a contingent of seventy one inclusive of a thysiotherapist. Of the sixty three athletes named thirty two of them participated in last year’s games. Grenada will be defending the title for the sixth consecutive year and their 2017 roster includes athletes from across Grenada, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
