‘I Am Bolt’ Is A Dream Come True

(jamaica-gleaner.com)Brothers and co-directors Benjamin and Gabe Turner, while describing making their “I am Bolt” documentary as the realisation of a dream, are hoping Jamaicans will embrace it as an appropriate honouring of the country’s sprint hero Usain Bolt. The sprint mega-star’s life, exploits and status as one of the most influential athletes of all time premiered in London, where the directors are from, late last month.

According to Benjamin; “To make a film like this anyway would be a great honour and loads of fun. To get to do it together (as brothers) is like a dream come true really,” he pointed out in an interview with The Gleaner, last Tuesday night.”I just hope the people of Kingston and of Jamaica feel it’s an appropriate honouring of a great hero,” Benjamin continued. Both were present at the Caribbean premiere of the film, which was held at the National Indoor Sports Centre last Tuesday.

“We were just hoping to find a way to tell his story through his eyes, and live that kind of capping moment in his career, to go through it with him so, that happened and I think it came out well,” Benjamin added.Bolt won the 100m and 200m and has also helped Jamaica to gold in the 4x100m relay at three consecutive Olympic Games. He holds the world records in the 100m and 200m and has also won 11 world titles.

STRUCK GOLD

The directors feel, they too, struck gold by capturing the real Bolt on camera.Gabe described the world premiere in England, which took place a week earlier as “surprisingly big.””They told us it was going to be the whole deal in Leicester Square but actually turning up there and seeing the emotions was quite surprising and amazing fun,’ he recalled. He said they managed to unlock a different side of Bolt his fans and supporters might not have seen.

“I think some people, have, maybe wanted us to give him a bit of a hard time but I think he was so open with us and we got so much access with him that he got a chance to tell his story through his eyes,” underlined Gabe. The Turners gained much prominence from their 2013 documentary about Manchester United’s stars in “The Class Of ’92” documentary. They have done other documentaries including; In the Hands of the Gods as well as fiction films.
