ESPNCRICINFO: Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli lost his eighth toss out of 11 this IPL, which allowed his counterpart from Gujarat Lions to opt to bowl at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. That counterpart was Brendon McCullum, standing in for Suresh Raina, who travelled to the Netherlands for the birth of his first child. Raina was missing an IPL match for the first time since the tournament’s inception in 2008.
Raina’s place in the Gujarat XI was filled by Akshdeep Nath, who is likely to bat down the order; McCullum revealed at the toss that Ravindra Jadeja was likely to be promoted. Royal Challengers, meanwhile, named an unchanged XI.
While noting that chasing teams have had an advantage this season, Kohli said he was not too disappointed at having to bat first on what looked like a hard, true batting track. He added that, having defended successfully twice this season, Royal Challengers had good memories to draw from in that regard.
Royal Challengers would have to muster as much inspiration as they can, because a loss would drastically reduce their chances of securing a playoff spot, leaving their fortunes depending on other results. Lions, on the other hand, have a chance to move to the top of the table and virtually guarantee themselves a playoff spot, with a successful result taking them to 16 points.
Well they did just that! AB De Villiers blasted 129 in 52 deliveries, while Kholi got 109 in 55, to take the Challengers to 248/3 in their 20 overs. Gayle only contributed 6.
