The Beausejour Indoor Facility was the venue for the second annual St. Lucia Renal Association’s Celebrity Sports Day last Sunday, March 13, 2016. This was the final activity to wrap up the Kidney Week observance. Parliamentarians, politicians, media personalities, sports personalities, musicians, advocates, and other public figures participated in a sport of their choice for that day.
This event was the Association’s way of marrying health education and fundraising. Currently, there are ninety-eight patients in the public health service on dialysis and many more on the waiting list. Most of these clients are unable to afford this lifesaving treatment because they are unemployed. Dialysis entails a four hour treatment three times a week, making holding down a steady job next to impossible. The monies raised from this event goes towards off setting the cost of renal treatment and medication for these clients.
World Kidney Day is observed on the second Thursday in March annually. This year’s theme was “Kidney Disease in Children, Act Early to Prevent It.”
