Former Captain of West Indies Daren Sammy smashed 44 not out from just 18 deliveries to lift the Rajshahi Kings to 162/5 in what can be described as a must win encounter against the Rangpur Riders. On Friday 25th November 2016, the Kings took on the top of the table Riders who had lost only one game in this year’s competition.
After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, the Kings struggled to string together any partnerships from the top order. As a result, the St. Lucian born big hitter came in with his side struggling at 92/5 after 14 overs. In front of an appreciative crowd in Dhaka and in typical Sammy fashion, the skipper struck 4 massive sixes and 3 fours to allow the Kings dugout to breathe a sigh of relief. Umar Akmal contributed 33* from just 30 deliveries. Sammy’s quick fire 44* came in just 29 minutes with a huge six in the final ball of the innings.
In search of 162, the Rangpur Riders only managed to get to 150/5 in their 20 overs. Mohammad Mithum scored a well-played 64. As such, the Daren Sammy led Rajshahi Kings won by 12 runs, as Sammy was adjudged to be man of the match. The Kings are currently 5th on the points table, with the top 4 teams qualifying for the next round.
