The 2016 Caribbean Goodwill Swimming Championships got on the way on Friday night at the Rodney Heights Aquatic Center. Teams from all over the Caribbean are currently competing in a number of divisions with the hopes of securing regional swimming supremacy .
Scores of St. Lucians descended on Rodney Bay and took in brief remarks from the Minister of Tourism Hon. Dominic Fedee. Mr. Fedee spoke to the government of St Lucia’s desire to continue to promote sports tourism on a regional and international level. The MP for Anse La Raye/Canaries also made mention of the fact that tournaments such as these remind us that swimming should be an integral part of every St. Lucians lives.
Also addressing the audience was the Minister of Youth Development and Sports Hon. Fortuna Belrose. Mrs. Belrose commended the St.Lucia Amateur Swimming Association for their efforts towards hosting a successful meet. The former permanent secretary in the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports also reminded the athletes that tournaments such as these yielded world class athletes such as Jordan Augier and that they should all continue to strive to be the best.
After declaring the sports meet open athletes competed in the 100 meter freestyle and the 50 meter breaststroke events. The 2016 Caribbean Goodwill Swimming Championships continues on Saturday at the Rodney Heights Aquatic Center
